The King`s Avatar (Quan Zhi Gao Shou) got a lot of attention thanks to its donghua (“anime” term for Chinese people) adaptation aired during Spring 2017.

Maybe you have heard about Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, Overlord, or maybe you are a big fan of them. The common aspect that relates them all is that the Main Character is transported to the world of a MMORPG and most of the plot development happens inside the game. You can even consider them to be in the category of the popular Isekai style. They also share the characteristic that the players are trapped inside the game and that the MC is overpowered in one aspect or in overall.

Well, The King`s Avatar is quite similar in the way that the MC is OP and that most of the development is inside the game, but it has more depth to it. The series tackles many aspects of a MMORPG and that not everything can be solved through sheer fighting spirit, unbelievable skills or bending the game`s rule. Even if the MC of The King`s Avatar is OP, the way he needs to go through to get to the summit of glory is harsh and can`t be solved through solo style or nakama power style.

Synopsis (taken from Qidian):

In the online game Glory, Ye Xiu is regarded as a textbook and a top-tier pro-player. However, due to a myriad reasons, he is kicked from the team. After leaving the professional scene, he finds work in an Internet Cafe as a manager. When Glory launches its tenth server, he who possesses ten years of gaming experience once again throws himself into the game. Bringing with him the memories of his past and an incomplete, self-made weapon, his return along the road to the summit begins!

The MMORPG is called Glory, which is a game that involves heavily in action and dependent on the user`s ability to do fast actions per minute with their keyboard. Also, the mouse is involved so that the avatar of the game can view in different angles.

The game mechanics is like any other action game but in a first person view. The APM (action per minute) gimmick is not explained very well but it`s not a hindrance to follow the story. There are some features in the game which makes it very attractive, like dungeon records and PVP outside the arena where the defeated player have a chance to drop one of their equipment. Additionally, the player can craft their own equipment set through the equipment editor but this involves a lot of trial and error. There´s also hidden bosses, Wild Bosses, and Raid Bosses.  Also, guild system is well developed.

In overall, the game is very complete and can satisfy any gamer`s ideal game besides the issue of mounting pets.

For the Glory pro scene,  pro players get a lot of exposure to media and the chance to appear on commercials. In real life, McDonalds got this benefit by having the donghua producer make a promotional video of The King’s Avatar in one of their establishments.

 The Glory Pro Alliance is much like the first division of football. Team clubs must have a stadium and a proper staff for operations.

The charm of this Light Novel lies on character interactions, world building, and shamelessness of the characters. Also, every major character has a unique trait that you can tell them apart from others, trait that is very important in this light novel which has a big surplus of amount in characters.

If you ever get hooked on reading this series, I`m betting that you will be taking sides on one of the pro team in the Glory Pro Alliance. Even in China, people are crazy over it and would defend their team through sheer fan support.
