OWLS August Theme – Bloodlines

Family means everything (or does it?) This month, we will be discussing the importance of family relationships in anime and pop culture. Family relationships include a child and his/her parents, sibling rivalries, adoptions, and etc. Some questions about family that we will be contemplating on include how one’s family shapes his or her identity? How do we define family? How does a broken household influence a person’s view on family? We will be exploring these questions and types of relationships in this blog tour—so enjoy!

RWBY is an animated series produced by RoosterTeeth. The beginning of the series was very merry, giving a lot of time to the viewer to sympathize themselves with the main characters. Later on, the series gets into a more heavy mood with lots of questions popping up, and no definite answers are given.

One of the topic that became relevant in the series in volume 4 was how each main character interacted with their loses, the inner journey they go through and the interaction they had with their family members.

Talking about each family and how they became a source of strength to the main characters would make this post very long so the relationship that I want to talk about in this post is regarding Ruby Rose and her mother, Summer Rose.

Before the series started, the mother of Ruby was already deceased. She died during a mission she took as a huntress and no more detail were explained. From Yang, Ruby’s step sister, we learn that Summer was a super mom, always attentive and loving.

Ruby, much like her mother, dons a robe that is very similar but red in color. She has silver eyes, a trait that she shared with her mother and symbolizes a lineage of great warriors who inspired fear over the Grimm.

Ruby always have her mother in mind. At the beginning of Volume 3, we can see Ruby talking to her mother’s tombstone, updating her on all the things she has experienced, friends she made, and achievements she has done so far. This single action + the scene on the “Red trailer” can infer that every year, Ruby makes a yearly report to her mother, strengthening the feelings she has towards her mother, making her mother a source of strength she has to keep on living.

Even though Summer is not with Ruby in the living world anymore, it was thanks to the silver eyes trait that she passed on her daughter that Ruby got saved from her perilous situation with Cinder at the end of Volume 3. Confused at the moment with no more information regarding the silver eyed warriors, Ruby leaves the matter alone.

Besides what I’ve mentioned, the relationship between Ruby and Summer has being left vague at the moment, and the only significant piece of information we can gather can be found in the song “Red like Roses Part II”, where the lyrics give form to a conversation between Ruby and Summer, stating the regrets and sorrow each one has because of the parting of Summer.

In the lyrics, we can see that the death of Summer greatly affected Ruby, breaking her heart. Understanding the risk a huntress has to undergo, Summer tells Ruby to not become like her. More than the risk, Ruby has strong feelings that she wanted to become a romantic hero who saved people. With the death of her mom, grief, sorrow and anger strengthened her resolve into becoming one.

“We’ve all lost something, and I’ve seen what loss can do to people. But if we gave up every time we lost, then we’d never be able to move forward.”

Ruby to Yang (her step sister) in a letter.

The lyrics of “Red like Roses Part II” is shown below:

Voice 1 (Casey):
I couldn’t take it, couldn’t stand another minute
Couldn’t bear another day without you in it
All of the joy that I had known for my life
Was stripped away from me the minute that you died

To have you in my life was all I ever wanted
But now without you I’m a soul forever haunted
Can’t help but feel that I had taken you for granted
No way in hell that I can ever comprehend this

I wasn’t dreaming when they told me you were gone
I was wide awake and feeling that they had to be wrong
How could you leave me when you swore that you would stay?
Now I’m trapped inside a nightmare every single f’ing day

It’s like a movie, but there’s not a happy ending
Every scene fades black, and there’s no pretending
This little fairy tale doesn’t seem to end well
There’s no knight in shining armor who will wake me from the spell

I know you didn’t plan this
You tried to do what’s right.
But in the middle of this madness
I’m the one you left to win this fight

Red like roses
Fills my head with dreams and finds me
Always closer
To the emptiness and sadness
That has come to take the place of you

Voice 2 (Sandy):
I know you’re broken down by anger and by sadness
You feel I left you in a world that’s full of madness
Wish I could talk to you, if only for a minute
Make you understand the reasons why I did it

I wanna tell you that you’re all that ever mattered
Want you to know that, for eternity, I’m shattered
I tried so hard just to protect you, but I failed to
And in a prison of abandonment I’ve jailed you

I never planned that I would leave you there alone
I was sure that I would see you when I made it back home
And all the times I swore that it would be okay
Now I’m nothing but a liar, and you’re thrown into the fray

This bedtime story ends with misery ever after
The pages are torn, and there’s no final chapter
I didn’t have a choice, I did what I had to do
I made a sacrifice, but forced a bigger sacrifice on you

I know you’ve lived a nightmare
I caused you so much pain
But, baby, please don’t do what I did
I don’t want you to waste your life in vain

Voice 1:
Red like roses
Fills my head with dreams and finds me
Always closer
To the emptiness and sadness
That has come to take the place of you.

Voice 2: You’re not the only one who needed me; I thought you understood
Voice 1: You were the one I needed, and you left me as I always feared you would
Voice 2: Would I change it if I could?
Both voices: It doesn’t matter how
The petals scatter now
Every nightmare just discloses
It’s your blood that’s red like roses
Voice 1: And no matter what I do
Nothing ever takes the place of you

Red like roses
Fills my head with dreams and finds me
Always closer
To the emptiness and sadness
That has come to take the place of you.
